Squawking Bird in a Museum, 22" x 30"
Collection of Gretchen Mehring
Not being afraid to experience life is the message in the "Squawking
Bird" series of
prints. Squawking bird is symbolic of the life force that is open to
opportunities
willing to face anything head on, and ready to go after it all. The
"bird" is an
ancient motif for woman and relates to the nesting need, but the
squawking bird
represents adventure into the self through reality, a go-get-'em kind of
fowl.
These black and white prints are monotypes. I inked my plate and used a
subtraction technique to create these compositions. "Greeting the Sun"
gives
tribute to joyful song, the day and new beginnings; "Letting the Skeleton
Out of the
Closet" pokes fun at inner fears; "In a Museum" shows squawking bird not
as a
viewer, but as a part of the collection, possibly in shocked recognition
of
archival fame. "Meeting Her Indian Spirit" relates to experimentation,
mysticisim,
magic and ritual. And finally, "Receiving Knowledge" is about knowledge
as power,
but along with power comes responsibility, and with responsibility comes
wisdom and
without wisdom, knowledge is nothing.
